You may have years of experience under your belt, but even an experienced camper can get lost once in a while. That’s why having a great compass in your backpack can make all the difference in the world.
As once happened with me …. couple of years ago, when I went for trekking with my friends. It was really a lone place, an hour or two before the sunset, we all went for climb & decided to spend our night at hill top. we reached, weather was chilly, set fire aside, had really nice food, had a great time talking with friends as it was long time going out like this, after that we went to tent had couple of hours of sleep.
In morning I was trying to call home but there was no network available & main problem was the atmosphere, it was very foggy, visibility was hardly 50 feet, so every one was little worried,we tried finding way down but it was hard. Now days everybody have smart phone so nobody uses physical compass & network was poor so couldn’t use compass app but thankfully I had a compass in my backpack, so every one was little relieved. So we used that & found our way down & we didn’t have food left from yesterday so every one was very hungry & dying to go down.
So, long story short, even a small device like compass can sometimes save your day, that’s why now I have bought Eyeskey Military Compass & always keep it in my backpack.
There are many variations of compass available but base plate and lensatic are two standard compass equipment. Basic concept of navigation is same but lensatic compass are more durable. At first glance lensatic feels complicated to understand.
As there are various markings, multiple moving parts but just with basic knowledge.
But after using it for a while ,anyone can use it like a pro. Cover, base & reading lens are 3 main part of lensatic compass. The cover contains sighting wire, base contains floating compass dial & reading lens located on a movable arm which attached to the base.
Holding the compass in proper way is very important, as improper handling will result in bad reading & leaving you lost in the wild. Two main techniques for handling lensatic are Centerhold Technique & Compass to Cheek Technique.

Best Budget Compass for Hiking, Hunting, Camping & Backpacking
Eyeskey Military Compass review
It is a great compass by looks, it is very compact (approx. 7*5.2*2.5 cm / approx. 175 g / Lanyard: 18″). Made of high strength engineering metal and comes in army green paint & capable of working under extreme weather condition. It comes with centimeter scale, inch scale, reading adjustable eyepiece, table for calculate.
It is waterproof & shockeproof, so you can use it while boating & also in rainy days . It is made from high strength metal. Therefore it can survive through all the heavy tasks you will go through like hiking, motoring, camping, mountaineering, exploring, hunting and other outdoor activities.
The threaded hole on the base which you can use to mount your tripod. It will be helpful if you’re using it in the field for surveying etc.
It has special design of fluorescent light that allows you to read data in dark, all you have to do is hang it to your bag all day so it can absorb sunlight in day time & help you in night-time.
My couple of complaints would be the weight, but considering the features, its worth a few ounces of extra weight & one more thing I didn’t like is where the strap attaches, it is comparatively small & prevents it from opening completely.
There are also cheap alternatives available in market but you should use lensatic type as they are more durable & accurate & have more functions than normal flip to open compass. Hence I would say this is the best compass for hiking.
Finally I’m gonna divide my review in PROS & CONS for your convenience
- Great looks
- Waterproof and shakeproof
- High strength metal
- Compact Size
- Floating compass dial with 360 degree scale
- Heavy-duty digital camouflage print cover
- Built-in bubble level

There are other compasses too in market offering similar features like this one but from price & features point of view, this is best of both worlds, I would rate is as a best compass for hiking in market today.
