While I was searching for Best underwater headphones it took lot of time to learn from the basics, and if you also are searching for headphones for swimming or watersports then my research will help you for sure. Yes, I have studied and shortlisted best IPX8 rated headphones in 2019 based on my extensive research which I did for my close friend in Navy. The listing is done considering user reviews of high seller headphones as well as individual reviews on reputed websites like CNET or techradar etc.

My research began with a basic question about ….

Can I buy a IPX8 rated Bluetooth headphones for underwater use?

Well first thing I came to know that Bluetooth does not work under water due to inherent weakness in signal and water properties (read more about it at end of post)

So even though IPX7 or IPX8 rated headphones can survive under water, you can’t listen to music while they are under water, since you can’t get Bluetooth signal.

All that the IP rating helps is preventing damages to the headphones under water.

What Are Waterproof Headphones?

Obviously there has to be a reason for being waterproof for any headphone, if not it will simply get short circuit and stop working in seconds after being inside the water.

So there has to be level of protections which prevents water ingress inside the headphone circuits and drivers to make them work inside water.

Okay, so to cut it short and sweet, if you wish to get headphones which will sustain inside water you must look for IP rating of headphones, the minimum rating shall be IPX7 and best to get IPX8 rating.

Note – IP means Ingress Protection, an international standard certifying resistance to water and dust for consumer electronic products including the headphones.

IPX7 rated headphones are tested upto 1 meter of water depth

IPX8 rated headphones are tested beyond 1 meter and as specified by the manufacturer, as an example – IPX8 upto 30 feet.

Okay now the headphones are minimal IPX7 rated ….

What else shall I look for during selection?

Single Flange type
 The single flange earbuds are most commonly sold type tips in market. These are also available in waterproof headphones.
Although they offer comfort fit for most sizes of ear canals, the single flange headphones are not the best for swimming.
Conventional Earbuds
 The conventional earbuds are generally single molded plastic once without any soft tip cover.
You will find these in entry level cheap headphones or the once supplier FREE with some smartphones.
They do not fit properly with all shapes of ear canals.
Also they fall off easily and not suitable for any sport activities. The conventional earbuds are not at all suitable for swimming.

Fitted Earbuds
 Fitted earbuds offer the highest level of watertight fit.
The earbud tip engages deep inside ear canal thus providing good isolation and watertight seal.
Only issue is that these form may not fit to all ear canal shapes. However these are most suitable for swimming.

So above information shall give you fare idea about which type of headphones will be suitable for your purpose like swimming or water-sports.

Now let’s understand more about IP rating and What exactly do IP66, IP67, IPX7 actually mean?

IP rating called as Ingress Protection is a set of two numbers which explains level of dust and water protection provided by that electronic gadget.

IPxy = First number x indicates the level of protection from dust on 0 to 6 scale and the second number y indicates  protection from water on a 0-8 scale.

If only IPX is used, then the gadget is protected from water only and doesn’t feature dust protection.

If IPXY contains two numbers means that gadget is dust as well as water resistant.

Just to tell you quickly,

IPX8 means better than IPX7, but there are no exact requirements (IPX8 is usually claimed by the manufacturer)

Waterproof Bluetooth earbuds or headphones are suitable specially for water related activities, or where you probably can drop them in water.

So they will be best suitable for activities like kayaking, paddle boating, jet-ski, swimming.

Now here I am talking about the previous version of the Sports model which is number 1 in my list.

These Swimbuds Waterproof Swimming Headphones are priced almost half as compared to the Sports version, so if you are tight on budget and still want waterproof headphones, simply go for these pairs.

Also one thing that I liked compared to the upgraded sports headphones is the compactness, they do not protrude out of ears like the sports version.

Anyway although they use 2nd generation HydroBeat technology, the sound is pretty good during swimming.

Main thing I like about these headphones is the price .. yes generally they sell at around $20 mark which is one of the best bargain you can get in market, its really a value for money proposition.

One more thing to note is the built-in microphone, which allows to receive calls on the go … even in the swimming pool!

Although do not forget what I said in the beginning of post, that is Bluetooth does not work below water.

Please note that generally you will find that swimming headphones are wired and not wireless (anyway the Bluetooth does not work well inside water)

However if the purpose is more in Gym workouts, then IPX7 rating is more than sufficient, it will also allow you to use them during rains without any issues.
