Most of us land in trouble when the headphones do not sound well or sound quietly than expected. So here is my article on How to make your Existing Headphones & Earphones Louder without spending money?
Today we will see –
How to make your headphones louder or your earphones louder?
Now there are 2 scenarios
- You already own a headphones which is at your home and you are not able to listen it loudly it is quieter and or it gives a distorted sound level.
In that case what you can do is there are 2 options
– one is a trial quickly can be done which is a software boost using a different apps where you need to spend zero zero dollars or maybe few dollars
– or you can give a hardware boost also where you have to have a additional device called as amplifier which will be able to enhance the sound levels.
This is if you have an existing headphone at your home.
But if you have to buy the new headphones then definitely you must consider what is the correct impedance and sensitivity of your new headphone or earbud you are buying that you should know, so that this problem of headphone quieter is not faced by you.
Before going forward, I just want to WARN you that anything which is too loud, anything which is too loud, more than 85 decibels is very harmful to your ear, hearing damage can occur if you are listening to too loud music for too long time.
Here just the permissible time limits for the dB levels are shown for your reference –
So please keep this in mind before you try to boost volume.
There are 2 cases
– one is your hearing damage can occur
– second is your headphone itself can get damaged because of the more power supplied to it and if it is not capable.
Coming to the Sound dB SPL & exposure time before hearing damage may occur – that is – you have an existing headphone at home and you want to boost the volume – you want louder volume.
1) Software boost volume of your headphone or earbuds
I have given list of apps for iPhone users these are the apps Bass booster, KaiserTone
all these apps you can download one by one and try which one works for best for your headphone.
Volume Booster Apps For iPhone
- Bass Booster
- KaiserTone
- MyuRa HiRes
- ONKYO HF
- Boom Music
- Equalizer+
- Volume+
Now this will enable you to quickly do it at home without spending a penny if you want.
If you have an Android phone then you go to google play store and I am suggesting these apps for you for android users.
Volume Booster Apps For Android Phone
- Wavelet
- Volume Booster
- Precise Volume
- Poweramp Equalizer
- Volume Booster Pro
- VLC for Android
So it is simple – these apps can be downloaded quickly and tried.
If you are satisfied well – then you can stop here or if you are not satisfied go to the next step.
What is the next step? it is a hardware boost
2) Hardware boost volume of your headphone or earbuds
In the sense you need to add some hardware to get louder volume from your headphones.
So what you can do?
There are 2 types
– one is a portable amp and dac digital to analog converter.
What it means that digital signal from the phone it will convert to analog and supply to your headphones.
It can be a portable one which is USB powered or self battery powered or you can have amplifier which is plugged into your power socket.
What it does? it boosts the output power and it improves the sound quality.
Many times these amplifiers has got very good equalizers also.
So I’ve given the samples here this is
– $35 Micro Amp HF 400 or
– Power play P2 $59 or
– $99 Estudio ES100.
Behringer MICROAMP HA400 Ultra-Compact 4 Channel Stereo Headphone Amplifier

Behringer POWERPLAY P2 Ultra-Compact Personal in-Ear Monitor Amplifier
https://amzn.to/3dcyte6
EarStudio ES100 MK2-24bit Portable High-Resolution Bluetooth Receiver/USB DAC/Headphone Amp with LDAC, aptX HD, aptX, AAC (3.5mm Unbalanced & 2.5mm Balanced Output)
https://amzn.to/3Svqvgc
These are the representative and very highly sold in market.
Product links for this I have given in video description in case you want to check it, you can go there and check.
So this is one method where you plug in your phone to the amplifier and the output of the amplifier goes to your headphone, where you can boost the volume easily.
This is the hardware method.
First we saw software method, second is hardware method.
So with these two surely you will be able to solve your problem.
Now coming to – if you want to buy a New headphone, then what?
3) Buying New Headphones – Selecting Louder headphones or earbuds
Look for What is your Headphones or Earbuds Sensitivity?
Then you need to look for headphone sensitivity.
Generally the range is from 75 to 125 dB sound pressure level per milliwatt, Okay?
What it means that, if you provide one milliwatt of power to the headphone then it will create this much dB of sound pressure.
You can see here – generally it is simulated. This is a headphone and these are the ear canals these are the ear canals and the programmer is simulating how much sound pressure level is generated on the ear canals. (refer my video for simulation images)
So one milliwatt of power creates say 75 dB then it is called as Sensitivity is 75 dB, okay?
So high sensitivity means more louder the earphone will be.
That is a very common sense uh – But sensitivity alone cannot be seen like suppose sensitivity is 75 db for two headphones, but their impedance is different then the output volume will be different for the same mobile phone.
So that you have to keep in mind also So what to do I’ll show I’ll explain on next slide What is the safe range for headphone sensitivity?
75 dB would be the low end of the scale 110 dB would be the high end of the scale.
But again this you should not listen to more than 15 minutes.
So always I am saying louder is not the better, there are chances that you can damage your hearing capability.
So Headphones Sensitivity is reported in 2 ways
– the latest way is dB/V and
– the old way is dB/milliwatt.
This is what we saw first.
So if you want to compare them one is to one without considering the impedance of the headphone then look for the dB/V specification of the headphones.
Suppose one has got 75 dB/V the other is having 80 dB/V then definitely 80 dB/V will be more louder than the previous one.
This is so simple !
In case you don’t have that then you may have to do some math and convert the sensitivity in dB/milliwatts to dB/Volts. okay?
So that is slightly complicated I don’t suggest you should go into that complication in case you need some help then do comment on your either headphone model or your phone model and I will be able to suggest what is the best solution for that.
Coming to the second point one is the sensitivity and second is impedance.
Look for What is your Headphones or Earbuds Impedance?
So impedance typical range is 8 to 600 ohms – very wide range.
The higher ohms what it means whenever the impedance is 30 to 80 ohm or more okay? In that case it will be generally by the audiophilia.
What it means that those who are working for studio quality those who are working for generation of song or some work which is related to studio, then they can have higher amperage or high impedance or you can have it for desktop computer or laptop.
But generally if you are a mobile user casual listener then 20 to 40 ohm impedance is more than sufficient.
So that is a general guideline I am giving you.
Again I am saying if you have a specific question regarding your headphone model do let me know in the comment section.
Again simple more the more the impedance the more power is required by to deliver the audio levels because the driver needs to be driven by the electrical power and that comes from the basic device which is your mobile phone or computer or laptop.
So if you have a headphone with very high impedance and if you are connecting it to your mobile definitely your sound level will be too low and you will be not able to listen it properly.
So in that case you need to add an external amplifier or best way is you select a headphone, buy a headphone which is having lower impedance level so that you get a very good effect from your mobile device within minimum power.
It will be able to deliver high volume so I think that’s all.
This is a very simple guide I have created, so that you will be able to get louder volume from your headphones.
Again the last slide I have kept this as a warning to you don’t listen too loud and be careful for your hearing capabilities.
Thank you so much.
